Assistive Listening Technology: What Are Your Options?

While businesses often prioritise visible access features, such as wheelchair ramps, hidden disabilities like hearing impairments are frequently overlooked. Yet providing inclusive services means thinking beyond the obvious and considering assistive devices for hearing impaired individuals.

What Is Assistive Listening Technology?

Assistive technology for hearing impaired individuals, commonly referred to as Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs), captures sound and transmits it directly to the listener—bridging the gap between the speaker and someone who has difficulty picking out dialogue from background noise.

There are three principal types:

  1. Infrared (IR): Utilises light to transmit sound across a room with quick and simple installation, provided there is a clear line of sight. Users need to request receivers, which can feel stigmatising, and these must stay charged.

  2. Radio Frequency (RF): Sends audio via radio waves to receivers or neckloops. Again, users typically must carry their own compatible device or ask for equipment.

  3. Hearing Loops: Also known as induction loops, these systems are seamlessly compatible with hearing aids containing telecoils—no additional device required. Although installation is more complex, the result is discreet and low-maintenance functionality.

What About Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is emerging as a modern form of assistive devices for hearing impaired, using smartphones or computers to receive audio. It offers convenience but comes with drawbacks like latency (unpleasant delays) and reliance on users owning compatible devices.

Why Hearing Loops Stand Out

Of all the assistive technology for hearing impaired options, hearing loops offer the strongest combination of unobtrusiveness, ease of use, and reliability. They bypass the need for extra equipment, avoid audio delays, and work universally—making them a preferred choice for venues worldwide.
