The Impact of Hearing Loss

Living with hearing loss presents challenges that extend far beyond the mere inability to hear. Understanding the impact of hearing loss, especially the impact of hearing loss on quality of life, can help us respond with empathy and practical support.

Emmanuelle Ding has lived with hearing loss for nearly three decades, and in her own words, she reflects on how it affected her life, the challenges she faced, and how she found her way forward.

My journey with hearing loss

“I have been living with hearing loss for nearly three decades. My first diagnosis occurred in France, 27 years ago. At that time it was described as minor, and I carried on without worrying. But gradually my hearing deteriorated further. Thirteen years ago I was diagnosed with a severe hearing loss.

“Four months later, I moved to England with my husband—learning a new country and a new language while coping with hearing loss. It took me two years to learn English through lip-reading and to find a job.

“Over many years I came to recognise the deeper impact of hearing loss on quality of life—what began as an inconvenience transformed into something that changed how I connected with the world.

The impact of hearing loss on communication

“Hearing loss does more than affect the ears—it affects how we communicate, how we feel seen and heard. Living with hearing loss means that my connection with the surrounding environment became intermittent and uncertain. There was no alarm, no fire or burglar alert, no timer or bell at the doorstep. Any verbal information, unless paired with lip-reading, became incomprehensible. Announcements in public spaces or on public transport were completely out of reach.

“In one-to-one conversations, I found myself constantly alert, needing others to speak clearly and face me, and often met with signs of exasperation. The day-to-day efforts of communicating became exhausting. I had to rely on others, adapt my behaviour, and frequently felt isolated. These realities highlight the impact of hearing loss on communication in both the practical and emotional realms.

The impact of hearing loss on quality of life

“With the communication challenges came a deeper effect: isolation, withdrawal, fatigue. I gave up music, radio, cinema, theatre, even small gatherings in my own dining room became very difficult. My world shrank, and with it, my confidence, self-esteem and joy. I became exhausted by the efforts required just to engage, and depression followed.

“This illustrates the profound impact of hearing loss on quality of life: not just missing sounds, but missing connection, belonging and participation. The loss is not only in what is heard, but in how life is lived.

Regaining connection

“Thankfully, I found support through a self-management programme with Hearing Link. By working through the challenges and building new strategies, I found ways back to myself. It wasn’t simple, but it showed that while hearing loss might change our lives, it doesn’t have to define them.”

Why this matters

Understanding the impact of hearing loss, and especially the impact of hearing loss on communication is essential for everyone: businesses, public venues, friends and families. The barriers hearing loss creates can be hidden to those without them, but the consequences are real.

By recognising these impacts and working to remove them, we help create environments where everyone can participate, engage and belong. Here at Contacta, we believe that assistive technology, especially properly installed and maintained hearing loops, plays a vital role in easing interactions, restoring human connection and helping reduce the negative effects of hearing loss.

Contacta’s systems are on every high street in the UK. We have worked with some of the biggest retailers and have ongoing relationships with many, maintaining and upgrading systems to keep them at the forefront of accessibility for customers with hearing loss.
