02 Oct Dual technology specified for UK bus manufacturers
New guidelines have been issued by the Department of Transport that require bus manufacturers in England, Scotland and Wales to offer passengers dual technologies for assistive listening.
Published on the 21st September 2026, the guidelines bring together agreed accessibility standards developed by the Bus Manufacturing Expert Panel. The Department for Transport (DfT) convened the panel to explore how the bus industry could collectively raise accessibility standards.
Amongst a range of accessibility measures designed to meet the needs of people with mobility or sensory issues, the guidelines detail buses should be fitted with both Auracast and hearing loop technology in the boarding area of the bus “to hear the driver and aid their communication”.
The guidelines also state the use of Auracast in making information audible to passengers during their journeys.
Specific mention is given to the need for appropriate signage to let passengers know the systems are in place, regular training of drivers to be able to assist passengers with hearing loss and regular testing and maintenance of equipment.
The guidelines come ahead of the October 2026 date for compliance with PSVAR (Public Service Vehicle Accessibility Regulations), designed to ensure that buses and coaches are accessible to all passengers.
Recent research by UK hearing loss charity, RNID, suggests that 77% of people who are deaf or have hearing loss face significant and systemic barriers when travelling on public transport.
The Clear Signals report highlights the consequences of not being able to access information. Nearly four in five (79%) say they are constantly “on alert” during journeys, while 41% feel that accessibility barriers limit their independence.
Chief Revenue Officer at Contacta, Shelley Rolfe, said;
“It’s vital information on buses and coaches is accessible to passengers with hearing loss in order for them to travel independently and with confidence. These are noisy environments, often running to tight schedules, and they can be extremely stressful to navigate when you can’t hear clearly.
“It’s great to see recognition of the fact that installation on its own is not enough, and that systems need to be regularly tested and maintained.”
