The importance of site surveys

An important part of planning an assistive listening system is the site survey.

No matter how much information we have from architects’ drawings, detailed conversations with clients or photographs of the space, there is no substitute for being in the room.

So why are site visits essential?  What happens during one and what do we learn from them?  Here’s our at a glance guide.

Recommending the correct system

  • Different assistive listening systems have different capabilities and suit different spaces. For example, a large area hearing loop could be ideal for a lecture hall while an infrared system offers confidentiality for a meeting room
  • Site surveys mean engineers can work out where loop cabling can be laid and any features that might impact the strength of the sound signal, such as air conditioning systems

The clients’ needs and requirements

  • We need to understand the client’s requirements. Face to face conversation in the space makes for the best outcome
  • Engineers can also see whether flooring can be moved, the possible locations for transmitters or hearing loop drivers, and where signage could be placed

Testing a hearing loop

  • We don’t install a hearing loop system until we have established it would work to the IEC 60118-4 standard, and give hearing aid users the correct sound quality
  • A test loop involves temporarily placing some cabling around the room and powering the loop up. Readings from a strength meter will show if the signal is sufficient.  Changes can then be made to the layout of the loop or an alternative system recommended

One to one loops

  • These are for conversations are between two people at a till point, a banking window, a reception desk etc.
  • Factors such as ambient noise and the presence of security glass or screens impact on our system recommendations
  • An engineer will also factor in the available counter space and the client’s budget to their selection from our extensive range
